Hello out there! The Fabulous Foodie needs you!
We’ve been doing a great deal of thinking about sandwiches lately, and just how personally important they can be to people. Everyone from the greatest gourmands to those who couldn’t boil water seems to have very firmly held beliefs about what constitutes a great sandwich. So we want to find the best. To this end we’re doing a survey of the world’s favourite sandwiches, and we want to hear from everyone.
And we want specifics. What are your top three favourite sandwiches? On what kind of bread? Toasted or untoasted? Do you make them yourself, or buy them? If you do buy them, where from? Do they require any specific accompaniments to make them perfect, such as a sour pickle, or a milkshake, or a bowl of soup?
Don’t be afraid to respond if your choice of sandwich seems eccentric, or dull, or, to a palate less finely honed than yours, downright unpleasant. There are no wrong answers or sandwiches here; only the sandwich you love.
You can respond by commenting to this post. So join the Great Sandwich Survey and make yourself heard!

well of course you and I have had sandwiches on the brain lately so it is only right that I share the following story
Years gone by when my aunt was in a family way, she had an urge for a sandwich. She knew exactly the sandwich she wanted. She gathered the ingredients, careful assembled them just so, arranged her masterpiece on a plate with a small pile of potato chips on the side. Before tucking into her work of culinary art, she nip into the ladies (after all she was about 8 months along and when you have to go, you have to go - sandwich or no).
She came back, looking forward to settling in for a comforting nosh when what to here horrified eyes should appear?! Her mother, holding the half eat remains of the sandwich.
In response the shriek of agony, my grandmother said, “Oh. I just saw it sitting here. I didn’t think you wanted it.” My aunt snatched the sandwich back - as I am told and locked herself and the remains in her room until she was done.
As for my favorite sandwiches, there are two. My current favorite and my childhood favorite.
My current favorite is tuna with just a whisper of mayo and finely chopped celery on a toasted plain bagel. It must be a well0toasted bagel, just this side of burnt and when I say finely chopped celery, I do mean finely chopped. Not massacred in a food processor, but not large enough to stil exhibit any intrinsically celery shape.
My other favorite sandwich - and as it has been so since childhood, I make no apologis for how it might sound — bologna (beef, none of that turkey nonsense) and american cheese (yellow only, no white) on a squishy white bread. NOTHING ELSE ON IT. And the bologna and cheese must be laid in alternating layers. The adult version of the (which is still very much my comfort food of choice is exactly the same but is housed on a plain bagel (untoasted) instead of squishy white bread.
Now I am hungry. I wonder if I have any squishy white bread in the house?

One of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had is from a deli down the street from me, in Oxford, UK. White baguette, with mayo instead of butter. Then a scoop of chicken in green pesto with basil. Topped with lettuce and red onions. Mmmmmm. I’ve tried it with ciabatta too but I prefer baguette, it’s crunchier.
If I’m going for home-made, though, I like: brown granary bread, butter, tuna with a hint of mayo, cheese and onion. Delish.
