Happy German Chocolate Cake Day

June 11. Some people think of it as King Henry VIII of England and Catherine of Aragon wedding anniversary. *sigh* Those crazy kids. Wish it could have worked out for them but hey … what’s done is done. Others mark it down because it is Hugh Laurie’s birthday – Happy Birthday, Hugh.

Me? I think of it as German Chocolate Cake Day.

Now, there isn’t a lot to say about German Chocolate cake – aside from “yum” – but here is something that you may or may not know. It is not German. Not by tradition or practice. In fact, has nothing to do with Germany, at all. No. Its origins lie in Dallas, Texas and the German in question was not the home of Oktoberfest but Sam German, owner of Baker’s Chocolate Company. The original recipe – published in 1957 – was actually German’s Chocolate Cake and the apostrophe got lost at some point. Not surprising really. Texas is a big place. Lots of stuff gets lost there.
