Now look – I know that whoever declared Feb 11 to be National Peppermint Patty Day didn’t actually MEAN the Peanuts character. (Well, no – I don’t know that but I am making an educated guess based on the context of the day being included in a list of culinary holidays) but they seem to have made a small but vital mistake.
The character and the mint chocolate sweet are spelled two different ways and though the idea that the former was named for the latter is adorable, it is not true. The sassy red-head came years before the candy according to Charles Schulz and let’s face it – he would know.
So given this small mistake, I think we can take it as given that either the people at Hershey can’t spell or that they had nothing to do with the declaration of this day. So who was it? Hmmm . . . a confectionary mystery.
Still – let’s not quibble. While I am happy to declare holidays for any and ALL Peanuts characters (especially Lucy Van Pelt who deserves and would likely demand more than one) that day is in the future. For today, let me be the first to say Happy National Peppermint Pattie Day.
