My how times flies. It seems like only a sort time a go, I was explaining the very important differences between zamboni and spumoni and here we are again – tomorrow – August 21 is National Spumoni Day. Good times.
But I hate repeating myself so I have turned my attention to something else that caught my eye lately. Pecans.
You see, today was National Chocolate Pecan Pie Day and August 22 is National Pecan Torte Day (seems odd to book end National Spumoni Day with two pecan days but that’s the way the nut cracks, as they say – well, they don’t say that but they should). But the pecan-fest does not stop there, no. Or rather, it didn’t because apparently it started months ago – in April.
April, it seems, is National Pecan Month and April 14 – in addition to being National Hot Cross Bun Day * – is National Pecan Day. Earlier this summer – June 23 – to be precise was and is National Pecan Sandies Day. I’m not quite sure what a sandie is but that’s neither here nor there. July 12 was National Pecan Pie Day. Coming up soon we have National Pecan Cookie Day (September 21) and in November, we have the oddly named National Georgia Pecan Month.
That is a lot of pecan partying, my friends. If I were inclined to puns, I’d say it was nuts. But I am not inclined to puns so let’s pretend I didn’t say it. Let us, rather consider, whether the pecan is worthy of all this celebration. I mean, I like a pecan or pecan pie as much as the next person but is it more worthy of say – the almonds which don’t have a month and only 4 holidays? Sure, the peanut fares better but by and large only in its capacity as central to peanut butter which in my book is quite different to peanuts themselves. Pistachios have National Pistachio Day twice but they have nothing else.
So what is it about pecans that inspires all this festivity and cheer? I’m gonna look into this whole pecan-mania and report back.
* hee! buns (’cause I’m like 12)
